Power tests for Ducati engines

THE INDUSTRY

The motorcycle market

The motorcycle industry is very dynamic, and it is influenced by - among other things - numerous government laws and regulations.

Motorcycle manufacturers are required to guarantee the safety, efficiency and compliance of their vehicles with current laws, with special attention to emissions and fuel consumption.

Engine power plays a fundamental role in these considerations, because it has a direct impact on motorcycle performance, reliability and efficiency.

THE CUSTOMER

Ducati Motor Holding S.p.A.

Ducati was founded in 1926, and since 1946, it has been manufacturing sports motorcycles which are recognized for their innovative design and cutting-edge technology. Ducati is based in Bologna, in the Borgo Panigale district.

The company distributes its products in over 90 countries around the world and delivered 61,562 motorcycles in 2022. Ducati races with official teams in the MotoGP World Championship and the Superbike World Championship.

As of 2023, and until 2026, the motorcycle manufacturer is the sole official supplier of motorcycles for the FIM Enel MotoE™ World Cup, the electric class of the MotoGP World Championship.

THE PROBLEM

Verification of compliance with Euro 5 and Euro 5+ regulations

One of the main checks that motorcycle manufacturers are required to perform is for compliance with Euro 5 and Euro 5+ environmental standards.

From this perspective, it is also essential for Ducati to ensure that the bikes it produces maintain the same characteristics and specifications approved during the vehicle type-approval process.

Given the influence that engine power has on emissions and fuel efficiency, this data must be precisely measured to ensure compliance with the established requirements, by means of Conformity of Production (COP) tests.

THE SOLUTION

Power tests on Athena test benches

In order to verify the Conformity of Production of Ducati bikes and in collaboration with the Eco Certificazioni certification body, Athena made its engine test benches available to perform power tests on motorcycles.

Specifically, Athena offers the possibility of testing the entire bike on the engine test bench, allowing power to be measured quickly and with minimal invasiveness. In this way, the power generated by the wheel is measured accurately, ensuring that the required specifications are verified. The motorcycle mounting system on the Athena test bench is also designed to preserve the motorcycle's operability, allowing it to be easily restored to its original condition, even after testing.

Thanks to the partnership between Athena and Ducati, the customer can guarantee that their vehicles comply with the new regulations regarding torque and power, guaranteeing the safety of their motorcycles in compliance with the vehicle type-approval specifications.
