Euro 5 Type-approval
THE PROBLEM
The Euro 5 provisions, in addition to introducing reductions of harmful gas emissions, also establish specific requirements for on-board diagnostic systems.
These systems, known as On Board Diagnostics (OBD), are designed to monitor the correct operation of the emission control system through special electronic control units.
When a malfunction runs the risk of causing emissions to increase beyond the permitted limits, the OBD immediately turns on a warning light on the motorcycle’s dashboard, alerting the rider.
This ensures that vehicles remain compliant with environmental regulations throughout their useful lifetime.
To successfully implement these solutions, the customer has decided to rely on Athena’s electronics division.
After a preliminary meeting to discuss project requirements and a visit to the company, complete with an inspection of its test benches, the customer decided to rely on Athena’s extensive experience to meet the challenges involved in adapting to the Euro 5 regulations.
Electronic control unit, calibration and emissions tests
THE SOLUTION
Athena’s GET team of engineers studied the electronic control unit and applied their expertise to craft the ideal diagnostic algorithm that would allow Brough Superior Motorcycles to comply with Euro 5 regulations.
After having designed a new exhaust system and updated the components of the old engine, Brough Superior entrusted the new engine to Athena to carry out the bench tests and calibrations necessary to achieve the desired power performance.
Subsequently, Athena moved the tests to the emissions room, where they evaluated the initial level of emissions, collaborating closely with the customer to define the optimal configuration of the exhaust system.
A constant exchange of ideas and analysis of problems has allowed the calibration to be increasingly refined to successfully pass the type-approval cycle by carefully considering both costs and performance.
